Observation of International Women’s Day
Celebrating the Spirit of Women
For over hundred years 8th March is being celebrated as International Women’s Day commemorating the achievements of women and amplifying their voices so that their rights to equality and self-empowerment are realized. Hundreds of women across different slums of Bhubaneswar came together and joined Ruchika on March 7, 2013 to observe International Women’s Day and to recognize their rights and aspirations.
To create a safer environment for women and promote women rights to build up a violence free society fit for women.
RSSO with the support of Concern Worldwide and State Commission for Women, Govt. of Odisha organized a rally which witnessed women participants from different walks of life marching from Lower PMG to Rajmahal Square via Master
Canteen. The rally was flagged off by Ms. Lopamudra Baxipatra, Chairperson, State Commission for Women, Govt. of Odisha. More than 400 women leaders from different organizations and Nari Surakhya Samitis of the slum participated in the programme. They carried banners, placards, leaflets, posters and booklets that called for providing equal rights and a safe environment for them. Leaflets designed on the service available for the women in crises to access services of Women Helpline, brochure designed with case studies of women who have received services from Women Helpline and bring a change in their lives were distributed among the audience on the road. Banners and placards containing the messages of women empowerment and Helpline services available for the women in need of emergency care and protection. The women leaders shouted slogans on the rights of women and for a violence free society.
Prior to the rally a meeting was organized at Lower PMG at 8:30 am. The meeting was presiding over by Prof. (Dr.) Narayan Rao, Secretary, Ruchika Social Service Organization who welcomed the participants and the guests and appreciated their novel endeavor. Sri Bhabani Charan Pattnaik, Ex. MP (Rajya Sabha) and Freedom Fighter, Odisha graced the occasion as Chief Guest and inspired the participants with his words and encouraged them with his songs. Ms. Jayajyoti Panda, Programme Officer, Concern Worldwide gave the vote of thanks and motivated to join together in advancing and protecting the rights of women to ensure that the future of women is bright and safe.
In the eve of International Women’s Day a pledge was taken to stop atrocities against women and support them to lead a life devoid of violence and safeguard their rights.
Women leaders from different women organizations and Nari Surakhya Samitis of the slums and staff of Ruchika participated in the programme.
